But would they be willing to deliver everywhere? I know there are already places where the private delivery services basically drop the packages off at the USPS.

I'll also point out that USPS is losing money now when (more likely, because) private services have been allowed to skim off the profitable portions of the business. Same old American story: privatize gains, and socialize losses.
