It's far more lightweight, because it's just one layer of emulation, not two. DosBox creates a DOS environment, which is pretty easy to tweak to your will (a simple .conf file, with instructions embedded in the comments). Running XP mode to run a DOS app is, IMO, too heavy an artillery. Or, as we'd say, "kill an ox for a kilo of meat".
Additional benefit is that DosBox also runs on Linux and probably some other platforms.
