I am not clear. My understanding is that the autoincrement field keeps the last used value somewhere in the header of the table (correctly if I am wrong). What happens if the header of the table becomes corrupted. How do you correct it?

The table won't be very important and the use will be kind of limited so the reduction of speed, on update is not a big concern for me (this is what I read in VFP 9 help). What does concern me is how more likely such table to become corrupted? And if it does become corrupted, is it more difficult to troubleshoot such case, as compared to the table without autoincrement field?
