Personally I figure it may represent a certitude about Ultimate Reality that I might find misplaced, but I figure it does no harm. Either they are wrong - in which case it will have no effect ... or they are right, in which case - Hey, thanks <s>

And it is hardly more arrogant than the general Christian belief ( with various qualifications based on the flavor the the Christianity ) that Salvation comes through acceptance of a Savior.

Anyone who would like to pray for me ( or make generous cash donations for me to spend on buying my own salvation ) is quite welcome to do so with my thanks.

>>Yeah, it's something the Mormon's have gotten into trouble with before. This is a ceremony designed for members to 'bring their ancestors' to Mormonism, thereby saving their souls (after the fact) and getting them into Mormon heaven which, of course, is different from everyone else's. I think the whole idea is that when you get to Mormon heaven, you will be able to see all your ancestors - if you had them baptized in the faith.

>>The silly side of me has this vision of people suddenly popping into Mormon heaven going "wait a minute! I had the perfect (insert your idea of heaven) going there, what the heck??!"
>>
>>The not silly side of me finds it a little insulting to your ancestors, assuming you know their faith (or lack thereof) better than they did, even if they did die 150 years ago.

>>>That's an interesting religious practice I hadn't previously encountered.

>>>Being non-religious myself, my first thought is I can't recall ever seeing anything else as patronizing in my life.

>>>I'm also thinking religious folk will use much stronger language.

Charles Hankey

Though a good deal is too strange to be believed, nothing is too strange to have happened.
- Thomas Hardy

Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm-- but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves.

-- T. S. Eliot
Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch.
Liberty is a well-armed sheep contesting the vote.
- Ben Franklin

Pardon him, Theodotus. He is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature.
