Energy Secretary Steven Chu said the prize would spur industry to offer the costly bulbs, known as LEDs, at prices “affordable for American families.”

Chu is the same guy who said "Somehow we have to figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe" so he may not be the best judge of what's affordable.
