i have a program where by the user can append directly from excel into my table.

i am using

append from (filename) type xls OR xl8

however i cannot control which excel the user is using

so if the user appends from a xlsx file or a newer version of excel my program crashes

how do i ensure that the file is always appended irrespective of the version
