Hmm. Couldn't find any reference to that in the requirements link (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506(v=sql.110).aspx) except:
"To make sure that the Visual Studio component can be installed correctly, SQL Server requires you to install an update." No other mention anywhere - typical MS :-}
