We had a shift of vocals time ago. The people where I came from up in there mountains doesn't do the step. And isolation into valleyes (this is not the alps but it was enough) results in a general dialect of that area with words and phrasings differ in the same village if you belong to upper or lower end. Next village (they are chained like pearls) or those in the next valley will have stuff that nobody else will understand.
But local dialects is like own language: It has to keep alive. Not dead alive, change must be.

The german colonies spread over europe (sometimes I think they where everywhere) normaly stuck to behavior a historian might be interested. But this is other problem.
