Are you talking about Mono? (http://www.mono-project.com/Main_Page). It's very much alive, but most of the current work is going into mobile support, as that's where most of the developer interest is.

There appearantly is a CLR version available for Apple and possibly also one for Unix, but they are more or less dust collecting open source projects with minimal or no support.
