>>A better example is Silverlight. That was "unthinkable" in many ways but mainly in its sheer stupidity.

All they've done is damn it with faint praise again. It's not EOL'ed, "they never announce future plans this far in advance" etc etc, SL5 will be supported until 2021 and while Metro isn't SL, it has enough common elements that SL people who don't have their heads in the sand have plenty of time to prepare etc etc. Soon there will be MVPs blogging about Metro improvements on SL, promoting their own conversion consultancy services and urging SL people not to be afraid of the sky falling. Nothing abrupt about any of this. ;-)

If you're concerned about Silverlight, now there's whispers that C# and NET itself are in for the same treatment. ;-)
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
"
-- Shakespeare: Coriolanus, Act 1, scene 1
