In my experience, after taking a bit of a hiatus from the whole programming world, and jumping back in and being exposed to different communities and technologies, I am absolutely amazed, not at how diverse the technology eco-system, but how robust and mature each sub-eco-system is.
What I mean by that is if you consider Perl, Ruby, Python, JavaScript, PHP, and many other free and open technologies, and think they're all some hobby languages that are somewhat workable, you'd be very very wrong.
