Hmm, this page (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff845069.aspx) shows that MailMerge.Destination is read/write in Word 2010, as you'd expected.

Have you tried stepping through the code and trying to set this property from the Command Window just to see what's possible?
