>Personally, if I'm facing a trade-off between fuel efficiency and traction/handling, I'll take the latter every time. With every set of performance tires I've owned, I can think of at least one circumstance where I barely avoided an accident, and I wouldn't have if I hadn't had good tires. "Green" tires might save a few percent in fuel costs, but is it worth it if they can't save you in an emergency?

And if you're thinking green, just consider the cost (in money and overall energy consumption) of a funeral/hospital stay, wreck removal, lawyers etc etc. All these would consume about one or two orders of magnitude more than the meager percentage of a fuel saving (ok, I give up: a fuel savings) on these tires would be.
