The mantra about "younger programmers being more efficient" is the one I have heard many times over the years, and it has probably tanked many a software company. I wouldn't be where I am without a few good mentors; learning the dos and donts on one's own is costly in time and money, and you may lose a lot of business - I know, as I worked in places where we got that business over the dead bodies of those young, self-taught programmers.

Sure, they are cheaper by the hour, but more expensive by the project, specially if left alone. Which is good for these kids, they are paid to learn.
