Because he may do what they can't - do something that prevents planned obsolescence, or something that can't be advertised, or something that was intentionally omitted so it wouldn't endanger the sales of neighboring models from the same manufacturers. IOW, the solo guy has no lawyers and no salesm... salespe... sellers to think about. He can do what he wants, it's his car.

Sometimes, this even works.
