>I recently heard a story on NPR that a very small percentage (I don't remember the exact number) of hybrid car owners would buy a hybrid again, saying the fuel savings were far outweighed by the increased purchase price. They just didn't get any savings.

I read about that survey too.

I imagine it was appropriately targeted at fools who bought hybrid SUVs and other hybrid hogs that were simply way overpriced marketing gimmicks. I wouldn't by another one. Of course, I wouldn't but the first one of those POS.

Ask Prius owners if they'd buy another one. If they say no, then the only reason would be they need a truck or 4WD, because the cars really do save $$ and are nice fairly small cars. At 22K or so for a low end Prius, they are easily competitive on purchase price, and 50MPG adds up fairly quickly on savings.

There are only a couple of useful hybrids that actually get good MPG and are worth driving. Toyota and Honda have them (I'm not excited about the Hondas). The rest are, by and large, gimmicks.

We're looking at a Prius V now to replace my wife's 09 Prius because she wants more space. The MPG difference will be negligable.

>>I'm absolutely convinced that Toyota has gone way out on the edge getting mileage and reliability in the Prius - that is why it is so far ahead of the competition (and has been for a decade).

>>If someone actually comes up with a worthwhile modification for the Prius I'll be amazed. I'll probably buy it too.
