Thanks for taking the time to respond.

It's a VCX so I don't need the extension.

As I mentioned in the original post, everything compiles and executes correctly. I think of it as similar to sometimes needing an EXTERNAL ARRAY statement to keep the compiler happy.

This was mostly an "I'm curious about this" rather than "I have to get this fixed" issue and I appreciate all the responses. But it isn't worth anybody spending any more time on it.
