Not arguing the fact per se - except for grouping that more into the "OS/vendor category" instead of a "pure vfp" plus type of fact. Or perhaps into "available helper libs"...

Full ACK, but as web back end Linux is not as hopeless as on the desktop.

Nope. Acceptance of hosters is one thing, libraries/fwks/articles centered on web dev are even more important IMHO.
That said, when some hosters exchanged MySql to SQLite in previous LAMP (licensing switch of MySQL) a vfp based
alternative for accessing data behind firewalled doors was one option MS in its infinite marketing strategy (see mobile...)
choose not to pursue.
