You are correct, it is easier to use. The search box is readily available, BUT IT DOES NOT WORK.
Typically, I wnat to find a string like "SMITH" in one or more files. I type "SMITH" in Explorer search. Three minutes 44 seconds later it tells me no items match my search. (Quad core hyper-threaded CPU, SSD local drive). So I do some Googling. I find out I need to open Tools>Folder Options>Search and select "Always search file names and contents..." THAT was intuitive. And it does not appear to be a folder option, but a system wide setting. Anyway, I thought that would fix it. Ran the same search. Three minutes 44 seconds later, the same result, no items match my search.
I launch AgentRansack (the free version). Type "SMITH" in the box labelled "Containing text:", and in < 1 second it lists 2975 files.
XP is a little slower, but again, if I type a word or phrase in the "Aword or phrase in the file:" box, it almost immediately starts returning results.
So I'm not sure what it is that makes Windows 7 search better. Easier is of no use if it does not work.
>I didn't say it was faster. I said it's easier to use. I found XP search UI to be horrible. Windows7 is much improved, but still not ideal.

>>I have to disagree. Search in Windows 7 was rendered unusable. We do alot of searching (file based business). Search is vastly slower since XP, and Windows 7 was the last straw. We've added AgentRansack for file searching, excellent tool.
