About half of the complaints are in the category "too much x to be an A, too little y to be a B". Which is exactly why original bands never sell many records - they don't fit into the previously existing genres (because they're original), so they're too new and the critics don't know where to put them.

I'd rate such critics at least two notches down, regardless of whether it's art, cars, computers, cameras or whatever. Something not fitting into a preconceived category may be an impediment only where the categories are regulated, like in boxing. Anywhere else, judge it on its merits.
