Last I heard, the 80286 chips were used to run traffic lights. And our VAX tape drive had a Motorola 68000 in it.

Few months ago I rebuilt dad's machine - found a Pentium IV with 256M in it and replaced it with my previous motherboard (and bought a cheap dual core Athlon).I guess it ran about eight years - not continuously. Only now I managed to persuade him that these machines suffer more when turned on/off than on standby. And he likes the ten minute turn-off feature for the monitor, finds his way to bed with other lights off.
