It was actually Andy Neil who originally said that, but he was referring to fields with spaces in the names, and I agree with that. I feel a lot less strongly about field names greater than 10 characters, as the issues are few:
- Tag names don't match field names since they're restricted to 10 characters. However, it's not that big of a deal.
- If the table is removed from the database, the field names revert to 10 characters. If it happens on purpose, you can plan for how to deal with it (and this rarely happens). If it happens by accident, you have a lot of problems to deal with, this being just one of them.
