You need to change the backcolor and forecolor properties of the object. So, to change a combo box called 'cbx1general1' progmatically you would use:

thisform.cbx1general1.forecolor = Nn
thisform.cbx1general1.backcolor = Nn

where Nn is the composite value of the colour. If you click on the forecolor or backcolor property you can use the palette to change colours.
