>>The issue is that US citizens have to pay tax on their worldwide income. If she also has European citizenship and is living in Europe there will be all sorts of cross-border taxation issues, imputation and a whole load of complexity- believe me. This may simply be a pragmatic business decision along the standard "it's all about me" lines to be expected of the wealthy in 2012: allegiances and statuses are to be assessed purely according to their financial impact on me. The idea that citizenship may have a greater moral or societal value is only for the middle class scrabblers.

>Mind you, even Ingmar Bergman has left Sweden for tax reasons... so nothing new here. Unless it's only news when it happens in the US.

>I'd be more worried about the Brazilians and Mexicans going home. They may not make the news, but I think they more important as an economic indicator.

Ingmar Bergman has left the building. Now I suppose he is making his gloomy movies in the great beyond.

I don't know about Brazil but Mexicans repatriating concerns me as well. I don't know whether it's more an indication of our economic condition or the anti-immigrant hysteria, but it's not a good sign that they are returning home in such numbers.

Yesterday I had to smile at a quarterly letter from an equities fund where I have a little money. Things are looking good, it said ;-)
