Hold on right there, buster, we just had a two term Democratic governor, Rod Blagojevich. Oh wait....

The dad of one of my daughter's classmates was a Chicago selectman. That's not as high up as an assemblyman. Selectmen (and women) are unpaid, for one thing. I vividly remember one conversation at swim practice not long before Blago was elected. "We're finally going to have an honest guy in Springfield," he said. Ahem. Blago has joined the long tradition of Illinois governors in the hoosegow.

This summer I have been burning up Highway 12 between here and Lake Geneva, ferrying Emily back and forth. Just south of Richmond and the Wisconsin state line is a billboard for an NBC station. It has a picture of Rod and the caption, "He never watches."

The current hoo-ha is over Jesse Jackson, Jr. I'm sure you know he is a U.S. Congressman from Chicago. He went missing from the public eye about a month ago until his absence became conspicuous enough that the press started covering it. His staff stonewalled it for two weeks, then announced that he was being treated for exhaustion. (Sounds like rock and roll, doesn't it?). A week ago they issued another announcement that the situation is more serious than was first thought and he is in an in-patient facility. Jesse Sr., seldom at a loss for words, has said only that we should respect the family's privacy. Never a dull moment in Chicago politics.
