The sad thing is Silverlight had some potential as a niche product, namely as a tool to develop fairly straightforward departmental apps. Where things went sideways IMO was the perception that the proverbial power user could develop an app by himself or herself. (Great line from Bullwinkle: "Again?! That trick never works!"). The Lightswitch dev environment does not look unlike Visual Studio -- property sheets, method code, and so on. It is unrealistic to expect power users to do that unaided. But I believe that with some assistance from a professional developer they can produce something useful. We'll probably never know because the market seems to have decided it's dead.
