I actually do believe in smaller government, as in "the government that we can afford", but I also believe that a certain amount of regulation is required for all business that impact the 'national' life (ie health care and insurance, big oil, big pharma to name a few).

I believe in personal responsibility, but I also believe that it is the government's job to assist people when they need it. No, I don't think this qualifies as supporting the 'fifth generation Welfare mother', but monetary assistance, food assistance, job training - we can't afford NOT to teach people how to better themselves.

I believe in making a profit is good. Making an obscene profit is not. I believe in paying the taxes I owe (Yeah, I know..not so Republican an idea any more).

The Republican Party that I grew up with, while tending to be more conservative overall than the Democrats, still believed in fairness, were mostly honest in their dealings with the American people (at least up to Nixon, and wasn't he special in so many ways), and what was good for the country came before what was good for them (and their friends).

I am SO glad that John McLain is returning to the John McLain of old. Too bad the rest can't (or won't) follow his lead.
