One of my favorite novels is "Setting Free the Bears", which was John Irving's debut. It goes back and forth between two stories, one in the present and the other during WW II. That doesn't make it sound too riveting but trust me, it is. The scary thing is Irving was only 26 when it was published. It would be another 10 years before "The World According to Garp" put him on the map but the brilliance was there right from the beginning.
