That was certainly true at one time. Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Sam Snead, Lee Trevino etc all began as caddies.
With the advent of the golf cart however, that profession has all but disappeared from most country clubs.
That's too bad. It was a great way to get oneself thru college.
