In his mind the problem was so complicated that it couldn't be done with just a few lines of code! He kept on trying other more complex solutions provided by other people, but never seemed to solve his problem.

There is the saying "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink..."

I guess that applied to him/her -- I personally always like the KISS principle (keep it simple) and like seeing the elegant which provides the solution is a few lines of code. Also, this makes the overall code easier to read and maintain.
