This is the scariest thing I have heard from Google yet. They are experimenting with a new search engine (opt-in participants only) that includes gmail messages in search results. Think about that for a minute. Confirmation of financial transactions, including transaction details, being only one example.

>Windows 8 HAS been RTMed and will be available for download to MSDN subscribers tomorrow. Throw out that argument.

>I never said ANYTHING about selling personal data. The fact is, Google DOES scan emails to target advertise you. They can do that without needing to "sell, trade or rent personally identifiable user information". Now, I realize that email isn't secure, but I do expect that the company that serves as my post office respect my privacy and not scan my communications by default. The point of the Microsoft ad was that if the post office opened and scanned your mail, people would complain and rebel. Why should it be ok for Google?

>So you can change your ad preferences. Why aren't they turned off by default? Want to bet that a large majority of Google users don't ever change those preferences? Microsoft has no data liberation dashboard because they don't need one. If it's not collected in the first place, it doesn't need to be managed.

>Here's a key differentiator: "Microsoft uses cookies and other technologies to keep track of your interactions with their products to offer a personalized experience." If you want to track how I use YOUR product, that's fine. It helps me use YOUR product. But don't use it to push ads of other products to me. That's what Google does.

>Google stopped being a tech company years ago. It's an advertising company, plain and simple. Let's look at their key products: Search? Nope. They make money on ad placement. Chrome? Nope. It's free. Android? Nope, it's free. GMail? Nope, it's free. All are methods to push ads to you. Motorola phones? Not making money. Google hopes to make money there by laying off 20% of the company. But mark my words, Android will become an advertising platform.
