These days the competition between browsers for fastest performance is fierce. My guess is FireFox uses a lot of esoteric optimizations for HTTP downloading and hardware-assisted page rendering, and that one or more of them isn't working exactly as expected under all conditions.

Or, as the Mozilla threads imply, maybe it's a problem with Flash. Fairly recently, FireFox sandboxed Flash so if the latter crashes it doesn't take the whole browser down with it (although on my system the browser is frozen for 20 - 30 seconds before it tells me Flash crashed). Over the last 3 or 4 months, Flash has crashed more often for me than in the prior several years.
