In the early nineties I played around with Sequitur stuff.
Accessing the data natively was no problem, but I don't remember if/which index type was used then,
and I had to read those data mostly (bulk input) as I worked with another DB toolkit back then.
Was from the code I remember one of the better libraries.

Would argue against any alter table (memo pointer size vfp or FP ?) or even index change from vfp side.
If so, think about FP-compatible format.
