What the heck is a 'fast ethernet' mail server?

You need to make sure you're connecting to an SMTP server, not an LDAP server.

You can check out http://www.west-wind.com/files/wwIPStuff.zip which lets you send email without ActiveX, but as Mabry it's SMTP only. Some ESMTP servers are also
supported.
