Thought you might be interested that one of the best presentations at the American College of Surgeons convention last week, was about regulation, innovation and quality of care in the USA. Given by Michael Harrison, an inventor surgeon. Smart dude. He says that the days when the US led the world in inventing new treatments are on the wane, with Americans now slower than other populations to access latest care- and at much higher cost. Why? According to him, because of costly regulation. See if you can track down his presentation notes online. Shame that this is too complex for politicians to package into sound bites because this should be more of a concern to both partisan camps. Innovation is like manufacturing: once it's offshored to a certain point, there's no easy way to get it back.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
"
