At the time there was no practical oil exploration going on round the Falklands. In fact the UK government was considering slow moves to passing the islands back to Argentina. The Argentinian invasion (done for domestic reasons in Argentina) put an end to that and Thatcher was happy to respond (also partly for domestic reasons)
