That someone would resign after an election to "spend more time with his family" would be SOP - but this is truly unusual. Event admitting to "poor judgment" I could see. But to explicitly point to an extramarital affair is weird. Affairs are always considered dangerous in CIA if they come up as lies when there is the periodic "fluttering" - the polygraph, as they are a security danger but you can usuallyl admit to some pretty strange, unorthodox or even illegal behavior as long as you don't lie about it. I doubt the DCI is boxed, but still, the policy would seem to apply. Unless there is more to it and this was something long term he had lied about and somebody in counter-intelligence found there were attempts to use it against him.

Unless the affair was with Michelle Obama, Mitt Romney or Putin I don't see how this came about.

Sad, though. Only hope the President ( who has a pretty good track record in intelligence matters ) continues to choose wisely.

Addendum : my guess now is the biographer had set off red flags among the counter intelligence people. Once the decision was made at the White House - however long ago - that Petreaus had to go with cause it was hushed up until after the election. (sorry, True Believers. The President did what any mortal politician would do.)

Robert Baer is on CNN. He's the real deal - ex agency - who raises the point this wasn't about sex. This was about who the woman is.

We've come a long way from the days when JFK could boink an Eastern German agent in the White House and take acid with the ex-wife of one of the major players in CIA land.

Charles Hankey

Though a good deal is too strange to be believed, nothing is too strange to have happened.
- Thomas Hardy

Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm-- but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves.

-- T. S. Eliot
Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch.
Liberty is a well-armed sheep contesting the vote.
- Ben Franklin

Pardon him, Theodotus. He is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature.
