My grandson dropped a PSP into water. They (my daughter and her husband) took out the battery, then put the thing into an airtight box with few handfuls of rice. A day later, the machine was completely dry. Reinserted the battery and it all worked.

As for things which people do... I've seen a lot and done my share. "Insert 2nd floppy" actually works, but amazingly the drive won't read it, as long as the first one is still in there. The removal wasn't mentioned in the instructions.

Or the guy who didn't remove the mouse from the printer until it was too late. The mouse chewed up the cables.

Or the guy who blew out the dust from a floppy using a compressor... and had forgotten that the hose he used was full of remainders of glue which was sprayed on something the day before.

Or the 110V printer which was plugged into 220V outlet seven times, so it was taken to the repair shop six times. The discrepancy in the numbers comes from the 5th repair, which was successful, but the test failed because... the repair guy plugged it into 220V.
