>>>Thought it might interest you - I believe you're a student of that era.
>>
>>Very interesting, and I am tempted to read Nasaw's book if only to see the details of "Nasaw also disposes of the malicious canard that Kennedy was a bootlegger during Prohibition. But like many others, Kennedy foresaw the end of the Prohibition folly, which effectively delivered one of the country’s greatest industries into the hands of organized crime. He secured large stocks of premium Scotch and exclusive importing arrangements, founded Somerset Importers and collected huge profits." It is my understanding that in partnership with Frank Costello and Zwingy Longman a good deal of that "importing" from Canada took place before 1933 <g>
>>
>>There is also the question of the treatment of the daughter's lobotomy. I have not seen any explanation of that sympathetic to Joe Kennedy so that would be interesting. His analysis of the financial acumen and his appointment as ambassador as one of the worst in diplomatic history certainly seem spot-on.
>>
>>It is interesting that he says the 1960 election's "irregularities" are glossed over when it is a a subject on which most historians have now reached consensus - even if there is still some question about just how much money was in the suitcase Skinny d'Amato delivered in Charleston to steal the West Virginia primary from Humphrey or how many of the walking dead in Illinois walked into the polls in Cook County.
>>
>>On the whole, the picture seems remarkably to be the one that would be most palatable to the later generation Kennedys - i.e. the firewall that the sins of the father ended with the father and that the 1960 election was not tainted with original sin.
>>
>>It also snips any thread that the election of 1960 or the events of 1963 were in any way connected to events prior to 1933.
>>
>>I got the same feeling when the great film-maker and puerile historian Oliver Stone made JFK - indicting the CIA and military industrial complex on the strength of the story of Jim Garrison - a judge in the pocket of Carlos Marcello who had famously asked "who will remove this stone from my shoe?"
>
>Interestingly, the Wikipedia articles for Garrison and Marcello do not mention each other.

And I'm sure those two men took great pains to do likewise.

And what is equally interesting is that during that period of time Jim Garrison was the prosecutor in New Orleans - at a time when it was arguable one of the most corrupt places on earth - you'll notice the conspicuous absence of any mention of prosecution of Carlos Marcello - even though at that time it was such a high priority for Bobby Kennedy that RFK had Marcello snatched off the street and "renditioned" to Guatamala.

This is kind of the Cliff Notes - at least in regard to Garrison and Marcello - though I don't sign off on all the details of the rest. (though I think the guess of outsourcing to professionals is pretty good - my understanding is possibly 2 Corsicans).

But it is definitely a case of the dog that did not bark, when you consider Garrison's "investigation" ( and Stone's movie that relied on him ) never ever raises the possibility of mob involvement. Just simply never mentions it.

Much as J Edgar Hoover pretty much refused to acknowledge the existence of the Mafia.

cf Wikipedia "After Kennedy's assassination, the Federal Bureau of Investigation investigated Marcello. They came to the conclusion that Marcello was not involved in the assassination. On the other hand, they also said that they, "... did not believe Carlos Marcello was a significant organized crime figure," and that Marcello earned his living, "... as a tomato salesman and real estate investor." As a result of this investigation, the Warren Commission concluded that there was no direct link between Ruby and Marcello."

Heck of a job, J. Edgar.

Charles Hankey

Though a good deal is too strange to be believed, nothing is too strange to have happened.
- Thomas Hardy

Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm-- but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves.

-- T. S. Eliot
Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch.
Liberty is a well-armed sheep contesting the vote.
- Ben Franklin

Pardon him, Theodotus. He is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature.
