Someone else in house implemented kind of generic wrapper to deal with vertical partitioning. The current performance even for retrieval is not satisfactory. Unfortunately the problem is rather specific ( 2G file ) than common and even Foxpro applications exceed this limit rarely. Otherwise some real code would be available.
