Hi Christian!

>We usually run older versions of MySQL anyway, because as long as they have all the features we really need, there is often no reason to upgrade to the lastest version. Also you can download the MySQL libraries separately (without installer) and setup it up yourself, which gives you more control.

You're right, I downloaded and installed version 5.5.8 and had no problems at all, and it was much simpler and less "fancy" than 5.5.28.3. Interesting to say that MySQL "smelled" too much Unix for my "taste" :)

In the last couple of weeks I installed and tried to learn the minimum about PostgreSQL, Sybase ADS (Advantage Database Server), MySQL and MS Access (not really a database server), to finish the project I'm involved:. Don't want to be a database administrator at all, just learn enough in order to setup a database and access it (also, the minimum functionallity, just a few SqlConnect's, SQLExecs, SQLTables and the like), plus SQL Server and Oracle, and I can tell it's going fine. Well, not that fine as I wanted to :)

I'd like to mention that the server that impressed me the most was Sybase ADS, for its simplicity, little footprint, easyness of installation, and the very intuitive and clean utility Advantage Data Architect. Think VFP developers, like me, would find that it seems an evolution of VFP's data management (IMHO). It has all the features of its (big) competitors? No, but do I (note that I said "I") need more? Absolutely not!

If you haven't checked before, please, take a look at http://www.sybase.com/products/databasemanagement/advantagedatabaseserver/gettingstarted-foxpro, and you'll know what I mean.

Proeminent people of VFP's community, Doug Hennig and Ken Levy (I don't know if I have the right to mention them, if not I apologise) also talked about Sybase ADS. This screencast http://devzone.advantagedatabase.com/jeremym/fox1/fox1.html, also says much about it's easyness and functionality.

Has soon I finish the project, I mentioned before, will take a deeper look at Sybase ADS.

By the way, the very firt time I heard of Sybase ADS was in a thread ("Advantage DB sql string connection") initiated by Metin Emre (http://www.levelextreme.com/DataEntryThreadView.aspx?ID=1555157). Not sure if there is somebody else, here in UT, that uses it.

Thanks!
