If a hardware error is not reported to the OS, and the hardware is critical to the OS (like a boot disk), all bets are off and a blue screen is likely.

Why wasn't Win7 having a problem? Dunno - maybe the problem is new, or maybe Win7 wasn't talking to the controller the way win8 does.
