We do some of that in English too. A throwback to Latin, I think. For example:
memorandum --> memoranda
datum --> data
ameoba --> amoebae
octopus --> octopi
Then we have the oddballs
mouse --> mice
louse --> lice
house --> houses
foot --> feet
deer --> deer
moose --> moose
