>I've been very content developing and supporting software for my clients on my Dell Latitude running Windows XP Pro for quite a while now. I have multiple of VFP, SQL 2005 and a host of utilities at my fingertips any where I happen to want to work.

Will SQL install on that OS? If so, what version(s) should I be considering? Any words of wisdom that will help with the transition?

I would install SQL Server 2012 64 bit SP1. You will not be able to download VFP data from SQL Server easily (you'll need a SSIS package, I have a blog on this topic), but from VFP you will be able to read SQL data without problems.
If it's not broken, fix it until it is.
