>I've been very content developing and supporting software for my clients on my Dell Latitude running Windows XP Pro for quite a while now. I have multiple of VFP, SQL 2005 and a host of utilities at my fingertips any where I happen to want to work.

Will SQL install on that OS? If so, what version(s) should I be considering? Any words of wisdom that will help with the transition?

Install SQL2012 Developer edition. You get all the features and toys of Enterprise.
And yes - it runs fine on Win7 64Bit (don't install in XP mode!).
Make sure you put at least 4GIG or more RAM on the machine.
