Not always true. Each state has its own laws on gun ownership. It is handled mostly at the state level. There are ways to get around *most* restrictions though and those need to be tightened. For example private sales.

Clearly we need to implement tighter restrictions on purchasing/trading firearms. There is no reason we cannot have rules in place for finger printing, background checks, safety courses, laws on storing weapons, etc.
