>>>My Analysis:
>>>Out of respect for those grieving families, and until the facts are known, the NRA has refrained from comment. While some have tried to exploit tragedy for political gain, we have remained respectfully silent.
>>
>>I think that's a rather lame argument. Considering how many violent crimes occur in the USA EVERY DAY ...just when exactly is it that the topic is supposed to be talked about?
>
>You seem to have missed the point. In the immediacy of the Newtown massacre the initial reporting was flawed at best and falsified at worst. It is the latest example of the worst aspect of the news media. Namely, the desire to be 1st to report, trumps the accuracy of what's being reported.

I respectfully disagree & think you've missed the point - which is that if the NRA wants everyone to 'refrain' from talking about gun violence in the wake of someone shooting an innocent person with a gun then the NRA simply doesn't want to talk about it - ever - because such a day isn't going to come to the USA.
At 11:03 a.m.NRA leader Wayne LaPierre says they remained "respectfully silent" out of respect for the families. Here is a video clip http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2012/12/21/nra-press-conference-newtown-gun-control/1783227/ so there is no confusion here.
The fact that the reporter bafoons didn't get their facts 100% correct about this one isolated incident is irrelevant to that point (although obviously somewhat disturbing).

>There are several recent examples of the media leaping to report something during major events, anything, regardless of its basis in reality (see systemic rapes in the Superdome, the existence of a "trench coat mafia", identity of Atlanta Olympic bomber). The argument to wait until the facts are known before commenting is valid and would be refreshing. Of course, agenda driven politicians are not interested in facts, only in getting money, power and above all re-elected and for that they must pander to their supporters regardless of how crass it is to "not let a crisis go to waste".

>FYI: The violent crime rate in the US is at it's lowest level since the early 70s and if the trend continues will approach historic lows sooner rather than later.
