>>>I know that you don't agree, but the truth is that the only defense against a bad guy with a gun is a good buy with a gun.

>FWIW, violent crime is very low in Switzerland- where there is an assault rifle in almost every home. This isn't just "allowed" in Switzerland, it's a legal obligation for most males aged between 20 and 40. If you're not satisfied with your military weapon, most adults are able to purchase additional firearms. The government used to supply ammo for the weapons as well, but since 2011 you're expected to purchase your own. LOL.

>So why the difference? One definite issue is that the Swiss are very sensible and proper and the concept of going to a school to shoot the place up is positively un-Swiss. Sheesh, even if you Jaywalk in Switzerland you're likely to be approached and scolded by a passer-by.

>You might imagine that nobody brings out a firearm because it would like the OK Corral with automatic weapons firing back from every window, but I don't think that's it.

>Anyway, the very sensible Swiss perceive little connection between these firearms and crime and when there was a referendum for tighter gun control in 2011, it was tossed out.

In college we did a study of violent deaths by the use of firearms around the world. At that time every Swiss male had to be in what was termed the National Guard, until age 65. Each man was issued an automatic rifle and had to keep it at home. I guess you never know when Germany will attempt to invade!

During WWII the Swiss were a neutral country and had a standing army of 500,000. A German Field Marshall was talking to a Swiss Colonel, and posed this question: “What would you do if we invaded with 1,000,000 men”? The Swiss Colonel replied: “We would have to shoot twice”!

I think there were 12 deaths in Switzerland the year we did our study, due to gun violence. In Oakland, California they have about that many in a month. 465 in Chicago so far this year.

The mentality of some Americans is different when it comes to violence. We concluded a good part of the problem is due to social economic problems, which attributes to the breakdown of the family, and a number of other related issues.
