There is also the thought that he went specifically to that theater because it was one of the few that didn't allow concealed carry. Apparently, most places in Colorado will allow concealed carry as long as you can show the CC license. And of course, this leads directly into the whole 'if someone had been armed at the school....' argument. I still fall back to the question "What was going on in his life that he saw this as a reasonable response?"
