I hear you. These space-in-the-pathname and use-or-not-use-a-trailing-backslash issues should've been resolved prior to Windows 95. Would it really have killed anyone to automatically insert underscores in a filename in lieu of spaces, to then have them merely displayed as spaces in the Title Bar? Even WinAmp did this in the scrolling song title. It would even go a step further and convert %20 to spaces. :-)
